The result says that the foreign students of Chinese Indonesian in low grade have formed Chinese orthographic awareness which is mostly cognition of characters with left-right structures; intermediate and high grade students have already had the awareness of both left-right and up-down characters. The awareness of the Chinese orthography develops across the years; the awareness of left-right characters is higher to up-down ones, and the priority is recognized in the three grades. The results also show that the learners of Chinese Indonesians form the awareness of Chinese orthography earlier than the overseas European-American students with the mother tongue of alphabetic writing systems.
