Many testing and teaching institutions are endeavoring to improve the design principle and test format of their listening comprehension tests. This paper is a study of communicative listening comprehension task design. Following the principle of communicative language testing in general and the test development approach proposed in Bachman and Palmer (1996) in particular, the study constructs a framework of communicative listening task characteristics. This framework is then applied to the analysis of the listening tasks in influential listening course books and public tests.
