This paper first distinguishes between foreign language and second language, and argues the impossibility of natural acquisition of a foreign language and the unique status of classroom instruction in China, then tries to prove the necessity of classroom instruction from perspectives of input, output and interaction. A survey employing methods of questionnaire and interview is provided to back up the theoretical reasoning of the author's idea.
