Most basic of the various requirements is relatively high level of English proficiency. We hold that the cultivation of various language abilities is an integrated process; thus it is possible and necessary for us to include in An Integrated English Course the training of the abilities to listen, speak, read, write and translate. With the general improvement in the teaching of English in secondary schools, English teaching for English majors at the tertiary level should have a higher starting point. In compiling this course, we have adopted the theme-based approach, which would enable the learners to communicate on broader range of topics in both oral and written English. The process of foreign language learning is fundamentally a process of language input and language output. With regard to our students, reading is the primary channel of language input. It not only provides the students with the linguistic resources they need for communication, it also helps to improve them culturally and morally. By the time the students enter universities, they are mentally fully mature, capable of thinking independently. Thus in the training of their oral ability, it would be undesirable to set too many limitations on the way they speak; rather, sufficient room should be left for their creativity. 【Keyword】:integrated training;theme-based;reading;cultural enhancement;room for creativity |
