However , the present English teaching reformation has laid much emphasis on teaching materials, teaching methods, and learning process, hardly paying enough attention to how teachers should perform their functions. Meanwhile, the assumption that a teacher's subject knowledge and teaching skills obtained from his/her observations and experiences constitute his/her professional abilities exerts a negative influence on teachers when they endeavor to improve their performance. The condition is even worse concerning Chinese English teachers, most of whom have little systematic pre-service education and little chance for in-service education. With the advancement of teacher education program, English teachers are provided with more opportunities to extend their professional abilities in teaching English.
