It is proposed that this sense of 水 was originated in the secret languages of the triad societies in Qing Dynasty. Words containing 水in present-day Hong Kong Cantonese have come from three sources: triad societies, Cantonese, and local creations. This paper also contains a brief comparison between 水 in Hong Kong Cantonese arid the related words in Putonghua.
