In the first place, it is a serious but paradoxical reflection on the European colonialism. Furthermore, it exhibits the contradiction between ctviliza tion and savageness. And lastly, the novelette attempts to make a penetrating exploration into the conflict between evil and virtuous nature of humanity. These themes are displayed technically and profoundly through the application of symbolism.
