This paper, based on the investigation of stlldents' pragmatic competence in vocabulary, analyzes their weakness in pragmatic competence and the causes of the pragmatic failures. It also puts forward that in vocabulary teaching, on one hand, we should strengthen students' knowledge of Chinese and foreign cultures and pragmatics. On the other hand, we should teach volcabulary from pragmatic point and cultivate students' cultural consciousness and the consciousness of cultural difference. Thus we can improve students' pragmatic competence and English level.
