He became an avant-garde of American anti-realistic literature. To demonstrate the difference between the reality of the traditional realism and that of his own, Nabokov constantly carried on formalistic reform, in which the self-consciousness arises. Therefore, his unique perception of reality has become the root of the self-consciousness of his American novels.
