The amount of an action was expressed by directly putting a number before the verb. Today, the form, measure word + verb, develops from the form, number +verb. Verb measure words, which appeared around Wei Jin Nan Bei Dynasty, were developed during the time of Tang and became stabilized in Yuan Ming and Qing, and played an active role in the development of Chinese. The development of verbal measure words from the form of number + verb to the form of measure word +verb marks the accomplishment of the classification of Chinese words.
