1.引言元语言(metalanguage)是有关语言的语言。Malmkjaer(1991:xi)写道,“……如果有一个东西能把语言学与其他学科相区别,就是这一事实,即其主体物质必须被用来进行描述。一个无法转换成另一语言的语言,是没有元语言的”,而且元语言在任何情况下也是“一种语言”。元语言有双重性。它既是语言学家必不可少的描写工具,又是普通人指称和谈论语言的手段。由于它有专业性和技术性,所以被认为是语言学家的“行话”(jargon)(Wales,1989:249)。虽然大多数语言学家更多地使用数学家和逻辑学家的形式化语言或人工语言(如Chomsky的S-→NP+VP),但… | | |  推荐 CAJ下载  PDF下载 | | | CAJViewer7.0阅读器支持所有CNKI文件格式，AdobeReader仅支持PDF格式 | | | | On Metalanguage and Foreign Language Teaching | | | Feng Zongxin | | | Metalanguage is second-order language distinguished from first-order language in modern logic. Since it is able to (refer) to, describe, or explain language itself, it is sometimes called the linguist's "jargon". Based on Jakobson's observation that metalanguage is not merely a special tool for logicians and professional linguists, and on his discovery of "metalingual" functions of ordinary language in everyday life, this paper discusses the instrumental features of meta language and its omnipresent metalingual and metalinguistic functions in foreign language teaching in general and in ESL/EFL in particular. It holds that metalanguage is a variety which language teachers live by, and that nurturing students' metalinguistic awareness and competence is an important part of nurturing their communicative competence.
