Since it is able to (refer) to, describe, or explain language itself, it is sometimes called the linguist's "jargon". Based on Jakobson's observation that metalanguage is not merely a special tool for logicians and professional linguists, and on his discovery of "metalingual" functions of ordinary language in everyday life, this paper discusses the instrumental features of meta language and its omnipresent metalingual and metalinguistic functions in foreign language teaching in general and in ESL/EFL in particular.
