Linguistic theory of markedness suggests that the relative markedness of L1 and L2 features can be used to predict the areas of L2 difficulty and L1 transfer. Cognitive theory of markedness,on the other hand,claims that learners' understanding of the transferability of L1 features is based on their perception of the prototypicality of those features rather than the markedness itself.
