Rather than seeing metaphor merely as a set of mappings between a source domain and a target domain, the author proposes that it be understood as an on-line relevance-blending process, one that involves mappings among multiple mental spaces, and serves as a means by which to search for optimal relevance and to improve one's cognitive environments.
