(English Department;Tianjin Foreign Studies University;Tianjin 300204;China) | | | This paper, based on an analysis of four M.A. degree theses, discusses the relevance of overseas translation theories to the realities of translation studies in China. The writer argues that the mode of studying and applying overseas theories is fundamentally a matter of scholarship that underlies the practice of teaching and learning, an important issue that merits close attention. The paper presents the following tendencies as the root-causes responsible for inappropriate study and application of non-Chinese translation theories, namely, (1) consulting a theory without referring to its primary source or original text; (2) approaching a theory without scholarly rigour; (3) studying a theory without access to proper tutorial guidance; and (4) applying a theory without critical originality. The paper also proposes some measures to improve the situation.
