Statistics show that there is significant difference among Australian English, British English, American English, children's literature and articles written by Chinese ESL learners of different proficiency levels. Contrary to the common understanding, Chinese learners don't seem to lack the awareness of utilizing transitional words and phrases in their compositions to achieve cohesion. The paper suggests that the overuse of certain types of connectors should be resulted partly from restricted task types and partly from students' limited knowledge about the variety of cohesive devices. Limitation of this research and directions for future investigations are also considered.
