However, it is also a daunting task, not only for novice researchers, but for experienced ones as well. Based on an in-depth analysis of the main stages that empirical research involves in, it is argued that the process of concretizing the general research topic is actually one of determining the research type, which, in turn, provides the basis on which the components of research and their interrelationships can be predicted. These predictions will then enable the evaluator to further assess the important indicators of the research quality, such as theoretical framework, research design, research instrument, data collection procedures and data analysis techniques. Finally, the assessment will serve as the basis on which the overall quality of the research can be judged. Using the classification of research types proposed in the works of social science (e.g., Babbie, 1998) as the basis, the author establishes a framework for evaluating empirical research in second language acquisition. The framework distinguishes three major types of empirical studies in terms of research purpose: exploratory, descriptive and explanatory. Each type of research has its own unique design, data collection procedures and data analysis techniques. The ways in which the findings are interpreted are also different in essence. Guided by the close interrelationships of the components as identified and described in the framework, the paper discusses the principles governing the evaluation of the three types of SLA research. 【Keyword】:empirical research, quality evaluation, second language acquisition |
