However, there has been no systematic research on his thought, especially his Confucian thought, during the period of the 1898 Reform Movement. Combined with the evolvement of Zhang's thought during that period, this paper discusses the transition of his thought from traditional to modern, and to some extent discloses the relationship between his academic thought and political thought.
