The subjects were third year non English majors from Nanjing University, and the instruments adopted included a questionnaire and interviews. In the study, particular attention was given to: the time students spent in English reading after class, their purposes in reading, the reading strategies they usually adopted, the problems they met while reading and the relationship between reading and their English proficiency. The results showed that, in general, the non English majors didnt spend much time in English reading after class (the average is 2.17 hours per week), though a great majority did have some purpose in reading; most students did pay certain attention to their strategies while reading; the biggest problem for them is the lack of proper reading materials; and there is a slight positive correlation between their reading time and English proficiency.
