China | | | This paper discusses and illustrates lexical competence (which makes a dual picture of referentiality and inferentiality) and probes its applicability to the cognitive approach to lexicography (COGLEX). It is maintained that the inferentiality of lexical competence, one of the cornerstones of the mental lexicon, should be introduced into the cognitive learners dictionary according to the organization and content of the mental lexicon, so much so that a physical dictionary will not only be a list of things but also a pool of rules. It is necessary to incorporate inferential rules because the linguistic system (or knowledge of language) itself is a set of rules. So it is clear that the orientation of COGLEX is the interface between the mental lexicon and the physical dictionary, thus the notion of the learners dictionary can be innovated with the incorporation of cognitive mechanisms such as default-inheritance, structuring devices and projection mapping. The paper formalistically represents the deverbal nominalization processes of the words cook and gift to show what inferentiality may look like, and tries to find rules underlying the derivation such as the default-inheritance rule. Such rules, when properly treated in a cognitive learners dictionary, would make the relevant lexical items more cognitively construable. To conclude, the paper shows that the cognitive approach to lexicography is crucial if we want a learner抯 dictionary to approximate the mental lexicon of the target language, and if we really care how the learner can learn and acquire the target language more efficiently in terms of synergistic effect and/or exponential growth. 【Keyword】:lexical competence, inferentiality, cognitive learners dictionary |
