The novel exposes the three oppressions on the black women in the United States being the poor, the black, and the female. It also reveals the historical and existing factors that cause the oppression, namely, the thought of female inferiority in the worldwide male-centered society; the historical cause of the unbalance in social development; and the distortion of the black psychology by the colonialist oppression. The novel points out the path of women liberation - independence, self-support, and striving. The novel's quotation of letters, its changing angles in narration, and the aptly-worded dialogues all contribute to its artistic success.
